“Mirrors” by Justin Timberlake is my favorite song on the Top 40 currently. He is amazing. I love him and have been a fan since day one of N ‘Sync. He’s all grown up, he’s brought sexy back, and now’s he’s all suit and tied and ready to wine, dine, and dance. Oh to be Jessica Biel. His voice is incredibly smooth. The song is long, but it’s interesting. He plays with the melody and rhythms. Plus, I’m a sucker for romance.

31 Day Music Challenge: Day 30 Your Favorite Song This Time Last Year

Wide Awake” by Katy Perry was my favorite song this time last year. I looked up what songs were popular in June 2012 and it jumped off the list.  Definitely loved this song and singing along with the lyrics.  It’s about being a self-sufficient woman facing reality instead of living in dream realms.  Letting go and waking up, being yourself no matter what people think or who is with you or not.

31 Day Music Challenge: Day 29 A Song From Your Childhood

Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen is a song from my childhood. I remember skating to it at the Franconia roller skating rink holding on to the back belt buckle of my crush’s Levi corduroys during couples’ skate.  We are talking middle school Friday nights at the roller skating rink. Fun times.  I had their album, News of the World.  They rocked. Loved Queen.

31 Day Music Challenge: Day 28 A Song that Makes You Feel Guilty

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwCykGDEp7M

Hurt” by Christina Aguilera is a song that makes me feel guilty.   In the video, she loses her father, and this song reminds me of losing my father (in 1997).  The last time I saw him was at my brother’s wedding about six weeks before he died. I knew he had kidney cancer a few years previously, but I didn’t know it spread to his liver and that he would die from the surgery to remove the tumor.  I didn’t even know he was facing another surgery.  I feel guilty because the last night I saw him, I didn’t spend more time with him. We did have a great time dancing, and we did bond that weekend.   I said goodnight to him and went off to party with other people in the wedding party.  In the morning when I woke up, he had already left for the airport.  I never got to see him again.

Pachelbel’s Canon in D” by Funtwo is a song I wish I could play.  This kid is sick!  He makes it look so easy. There’s no way that is easy to play.  He plays all up and down the neck of the guitar and runs up and down the scales like it’s nothing.   Maybe one day I will get that good on the guitar. We will see.  He sure is inspiring!

31 Day Music Challenge: Day 25 A Song that Makes You Laugh

White and Nerdy” by Weird Al Yankovic is a song that makes me laugh. I laugh because it’s silly but also because I’m a bit nerdy myself. I love that he wrote this parody and think it’s hilarious.  I’m thinking of writing a similar parody for the song F-ing Problems by A$AP Rocky.  It would say, “Yea I like math; I got a math problem!”  LOL  If you haven’t heard the song yet, I have to warn you the lyrics are explicit.  But it would be funny to rewrite it to be all about math.  Yup, I’m (half) white and nerdy too.

31 Day Music Challenge: Day 24 A Song That You Want to Play At Your Funeral

“Holy Now” by Peter Mayer is a song that I would want someone to play at my funeral (preferably on the acoustic guitar).  I got stuck on this question because funeral songs are usually about saying goodbye or religious songs in my experiences.  Goodbye songs would be for other people to pick I think, so I picked this song because of the essence of the meaning behind the poetry is an outlook on life that I would like people to remember about me and carry on to their own lives.  It’s not a religious song per se, but it references religion and contrasts the childhood experience of going to church where we learn that once a week we worship to the idea of seeing every day life as worship and finding the divine in everything around us.  It very clearly sums up my religious beliefs.  “Wine from water is not so small, but an even better magic trick is that anything is here at all” is one of my favorite lines from the lyrics.  I’ve written before about my experiences with religion and my scientific philosophy. 30 Days of Truth: Day 5 Something You Hope to Do in Your Life

The lyrics to this song are a reminder to look at the miracle of life with humility and to see the beauty everywhere around us.  I don’t know what happens after death, but I do know that life goes on.  It’s amazing to think about the vastness of the universe and the diversity of life on this planet.  If our spirits do transcend to other realms or reincarnate to new beings that will be incredible.  It’s all a big mystery, and I would hope to leave behind that feeling of awe and wonder in those I knew and loved.

“When I was a boy, each week
On Sunday, we would go to church
And pay attention to the priest
He would read the holy word
And consecrate the holy bread
And everyone would kneel and bow
Today the only difference is
Everything is holy now
Everything, everything
Everything is holy now

When I was in Sunday school
We would learn about the time
Moses split the sea in two
Jesus made the water wine
And I remember feeling sad
That miracles don’t happen still
But now I can’t keep track
‘Cause everything’s a miracle
Everything, Everything
Everything’s a miracle

Wine from water is not so small
But an even better magic trick
Is that anything is here at all
So the challenging thing becomes
Not to look for miracles
But finding where there isn’t one

When holy water was rare at best
It barely wet my fingertips
But now I have to hold my breath
Like I’m swimming in a sea of it
It used to be a world half there
Heaven‘s second rate hand-me-down
But I walk it with a reverent air
‘Cause everything is holy now
Everything, everything
Everything is holy now

Read a questioning child’s face
And say it’s not a testament
That’d be very hard to say
See another new morning come
And say it’s not a sacrament
I tell you that it can’t be done

This morning, outside I stood
And saw a little red-winged bird
Shining like a burning bush
Singing like a scripture verse
It made me want to bow my head
I remember when church let out
How things have changed since then
Everything is holy now
It used to be a world half-there
Heaven’s second rate hand-me-down
But I walk it with a reverent air
‘Cause everything is holy now”

Pachelbel’s Canon in D” was one of the songs played at my wedding. It’s so pretty. Such a classic song.  We had all classical music playing during our wedding soundtrack, and this song was definitely one of the highlights.  Check out this version too – this guy rocks!

Wake Me Up When September Ends” by Green Day is a song I listen to when I’m sad.  It’s sad because it’s about losing someone.  In the video the guy joins the military and goes off to war while his girl waits for him at home. It’s about the fragility of life, how things can change quickly and before we know it life is over.   One of my friends died during the month of September, so it also reminds me of him.  Like, just wake me up when the month is over and I don’t have to think about that day.
